Short answer
An ice cream freezer is a chest-style commercial freezer holding −18°C to −24°C. In Pakistan the three common lid types are hard top (solid insulated lid, cheapest, coldest), sliding door (glass panels that slide, best all-rounder) and glass uplift (glass lid that lifts up, best visibility).
Prices currently run from about Rs. 35,000 for a small uplift unit to Rs. 215,000 for a large triple-door model. For most Pakistani general stores, a sliding-door freezer in the Rs. 95,000 – 136,000 band is the sweet spot between visibility, capacity and electricity cost.
In this guide
1. Hard top vs sliding door vs glass uplift
This is the decision that matters most, and it is not really about looks. Each lid type trades cold retention against visibility, and visibility is what drives impulse ice cream sales.
| Feature | Hard Top | Sliding Door (glass) | Glass Uplift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product visibility | None — customer must ask | High | Highest — full top view |
| Cold retention | Best | Good — only half opens at a time | Fair — whole lid opens |
| Running cost | Lowest | Moderate | Highest of the three |
| Self-service friendly | No | Yes | Yes |
| Fogging in humidity | Not applicable | Possible — ask for anti-fog glass | Possible — ask for anti-fog glass |
| Space needed above | Clearance to open lid | None — doors slide | Clearance to lift lid |
| Typical entry price | Rs. 70,000 | Rs. 46,000 | Rs. 35,000 |
| Best for | Bulk frozen storage, back-of-house, meat | General stores, ice cream retail, mini-marts | Impulse displays near the till |
The honest recommendation: if the freezer is on your shop floor and customers serve themselves, choose sliding doors. If it is storage in the back, choose hard top and save both the purchase price and the monthly bill. Uplift is best used as a second, smaller unit at the counter where you want maximum impulse pull.
2. What size freezer your sales volume needs
Ice cream is seasonal and spiky. Size for your peak week in June, not your annual average, or you will be turning customers away exactly when the money is there.
| Peak daily units sold | Size class | Recommended lid | Price band | Restocking rhythm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 40 | Small chest | Uplift or sliding | Rs. 35,000 – 55,000 | Twice a week |
| 40 – 100 | Medium chest | Sliding door | Rs. 70,000 – 108,000 | Every 2–3 days |
| 100 – 200 | Large chest | Sliding door / double stager | Rs. 120,000 – 170,000 | Daily in season |
| 200+ | Extra large / multi-door | Triple door or two units | Rs. 190,000 – 215,000 | Daily, plus buffer stock |
A double stager freezer is worth considering when you carry many SKUs in small quantities — it gives you two working levels instead of one deep well where the bottom layer never gets sold.

4. Payback maths: will it earn back its price?
Here is how to decide whether a freezer is an expense or an investment. Use your own numbers — the structure is what matters.
Monthly running cost = electricity + maintenance provision
Payback (months) = freezer price ÷ (gross profit − running cost)
A worked example for a general store buying a Rs. 106,000 sliding-door freezer:
| Line | Assumption | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Units sold per day | 60 (season average) | 1,800 units |
| Gross margin per unit | Rs. 25 | Rs. 45,000 |
| Electricity | ~200 kWh at Rs. 50 | − Rs. 10,000 |
| Maintenance provision | Service + spares fund | − Rs. 1,500 |
| Net monthly contribution | — | Rs. 33,500 |
| Payback period | Rs. 106,000 ÷ Rs. 33,500 | ~3.2 months |
Illustrative figures only — substitute your own volumes, margins and tariff. Note that ice cream demand in Pakistan is strongly seasonal, so spread the season's profit across the full year when judging the real return.
The season question: a freezer that only earns for five months still has to be paid for across twelve. Plan a winter use for it — frozen paratha, chicken, peas, nuggets and frozen ready meals sell year round and keep the same machine productive through December.
5. Correct temperature settings by product
| Product | Target temperature | What goes wrong if it drifts |
|---|---|---|
| Ice cream (retail display) | −18°C to −20°C | Ice crystals form; texture turns grainy and customers notice |
| Ice cream (bulk storage) | −22°C to −25°C | Shortened shelf life, shrinkage |
| Frozen chicken / meat | −18°C or colder | Freezer burn, bacterial risk on thaw-refreeze cycles |
| Frozen vegetables / fries | −18°C | Clumping, soggy texture after cooking |
| Frozen ready meals | −18°C | Quality loss well before the printed expiry |
Never mix categories in one well without separation. Raw frozen meat stored loose above packaged ice cream is a cross-contamination problem, not just an organisational one. Use baskets or dividers, and keep raw protein below ready-to-eat items.
6. Pre-purchase checklist
7. Maintenance calendar
Freezers in Pakistan rarely fail from age. They fail from dust, ice build-up and voltage. This calendar prevents all three.
| Frequency | Task | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily | Read and record the temperature; wipe glass; close doors fully at closing | Catches a failing unit before stock is lost |
| Weekly | Check for ice build-up on walls; check door gaskets for tears | Ice is an insulator — it makes the compressor work harder |
| Monthly | Clean the condenser coil and grille; check clearance behind unit | The single biggest lever on your electricity bill |
| Quarterly | Full defrost and interior clean; verify drain is clear | Restores capacity and hygiene |
| Before summer | Professional service: gas pressure, thermostat calibration, stabiliser check | Prevents a breakdown in your highest-revenue weeks |
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of an ice cream freezer in Pakistan?
Ice cream freezer prices in Pakistan currently start around Rs. 35,000 for a small glass uplift unit and reach about Rs. 215,000 for a large triple-door hard top. Most general stores buy in the Rs. 95,000 to Rs. 136,000 range.
Which is better, a sliding door or hard top freezer?
Sliding door freezers sell more because customers can see the product and serve themselves, and only half the opening is exposed at a time. Hard tops hold cold better and cost less to run, which makes them the right choice for back-of-house storage rather than shop-floor display.
What temperature should an ice cream freezer be set at?
Set retail display freezers to −18°C to −20°C and bulk storage freezers to −22°C to −25°C. Above −18°C, ice crystals form and the texture of the ice cream visibly deteriorates.
How much electricity does a deep freezer use in Pakistan?
A mid-sized commercial chest freezer typically draws in the region of 150–250 units (kWh) per month in summer conditions. At Rs. 45–60 per unit that is roughly Rs. 7,000–15,000 monthly. Keeping the condenser clean and defrosting regularly can cut that meaningfully.
What is a double stager freezer?
A double stager freezer gives you two merchandising levels instead of one deep well. It suits shops carrying many different frozen SKUs in small quantities, because stock at the bottom of a single deep well tends to go unsold and unnoticed.
Can I store frozen chicken and ice cream in the same freezer?
Only with proper separation. Keep raw frozen meat in sealed packaging in baskets below packaged, ready-to-eat items. Better practice for a shop selling meaningful volumes of both is two separate units.
How often should a commercial freezer be defrosted?
Check weekly for ice build-up and do a full defrost roughly quarterly, or sooner if ice exceeds about 5mm on the interior walls. Ice acts as insulation and forces the compressor to run longer for the same result.
Do ice cream freezers work during load shedding?
A well-insulated chest freezer holds safe temperature for several hours when kept closed, which covers most scheduled outages. For longer or unpredictable outages, connect it to a generator sized for the compressor's starting surge — not just its running wattage — and keep the lid shut during the outage.
